Abstract:

The University's Library: the main challenges
Challenged by the enormous wave of technological advancement that we all experience every day, the University’s Library might be tempted to focus all its energies and attention on the implementation and use of these new technologies, as quickly as it can.

Despite all the transformations we are seeing in the logistics domain, the Libraries can not afford to forget the missions that, for centuries, have justified their existence.

They need to:
1. Preserve, classify, and disseminate information;
2. Collaborate in the construction of knowledge.

Following this line of thought, the libraries of our time should choose some paths of resistance and correct some practices that are now common in the academical field. They must specially contribute to promote good research, namely the accuracy and honesty of the procedures.

This lecture aims to disclose the strategies used by the Library of the University of Coimbra to face these main challenges.
