We frequently hold U.S.-related education and cultural programs, such as conferences, seminars, and exhibitions. Biodiversity is everywhere on earth. It is the interaction of all living things with each other and their surroundings. The diversity of the environment creates unique communities of plants, animals and microorganisms, called ecosystems. Biodiversity in extreme ecosystems has been first to feel the impact of global warming. Species, if they can, migrate to new, more comfortable terrain. Others, such as those specifically adapted to live on ice floes, for example, could become extinct if their environment changes too drastically, too fast.

March is Women's History Month in the United States. The life of marine biologist, author and environmentalist Rachel Carson is the inspiration for this year's theme, Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet.

  • Black History Month--African Americans' contributions to United States are highlighted each February

Each February, Black History Month honors the struggles and triumphs of millions of American citizens over the most devastating obstacles -- slavery, prejudice, poverty ¡V as well as their contributions to the nation¡¦s cultural and political life. 2008 marks the 82nd annual celebration since Carter G. Woodson, a noted scholar and historian, instituted Negro History Week in 1926. He chose the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and the abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The celebration was expanded to a month in 1976, the nation¡¦s bicentennial. President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to ¡§seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.¡¨ To highlight Black History Month, a poster exhibition from "23 February to 7 March, 2008" will be held at the American Corner on the second floor of the University Library.

  • Broadcasting of the US President's State of the Union Address on the 29th of January

As you know, globalization has brought the world much closer than ever before. Macau's ever-growing economic power and influence has raised its profile in the United States, and with the increasing U.S. investment in Macau, changes in the political or economic situation of the United States may be felt by residents here as well.

On January 28, US President George W. Bush will deliver his final State of the Union address. This speech is considered to be the most important annual speech by the President, especially in this election year. It will be a reflection of the current situation in the United States and a summary of actions that the executive branch plans to take during the remainder of his Administration's time in office.
